Unplugging Uncle Bob

Unplugging Uncle Bob

Capturing your ceremony is super important! We shoot from as many angles as we can, zoomed in and full overviews are a must. We have worked on our plan of attack when it comes to who is positioned where and which shots we’re each getting. Our ability to keep from distracting you or your guests is at ninja level. But there’s one thing we can never prepare for or control, Uncle Bob.

2014 03 27 001 Unplugging Uncle Bob

Who is Uncle bob you ask? Uncle Bob is our name for a well meaning family member or guest who fancies themselves to be quite the photographer(someone spring to mind?). Because Uncle Bob loves his hobby so much, he simply can’t stay in his seat and risk missing images of your wedding. We feel for Uncle Bob, he simply wants to capture your special day. Totally sympathize! We do too!

So why are we talking about Uncle Bob? Well, sometimes when he wanders from his seat, he ends up in our images. We’ve even had a couple instances of him standing in the aisle (example above). This means when we take an overall shot of this incredible moment in your day, Uncle Bob is the first thing you notice. Especially if he’s stepped in during your walk down the aisle! No Bueno!

Adam and I try to be as tactful as possible when directing guests back to their seats, but sometimes (most times) we walk away and they’re back at it. We don’t ever want one of your guests to leave your celebration with a bad taste about your photographers so we do our best to shoot around them.

Now if you foresee this being an issue, there are a couple things you can do to prevent it. You can have your officiant or DJ make an announcement about it. We’ve had a couple weddings where this was done and it worked out beautifully. One DJ explained to the guests that the couple had requested an “unplugged” wedding – which means no cameras or phones (or iPads, and yes it happens!) during the ceremony. Another idea is simply having a sign (dare we say chalkboard?!) that let’s guests know that it’s important to you that they are able to be completely present at your ceremony so you’ve brought professional photographers to capture the occasion. I’ve pinned a few ideas on this board.<

Now we know that having a customized hashtag for your wedding so that guests can post to Instagram is a growing trend, so something can simply be said about remaining in their seats. Easy peezy! And it’s your wedding day, so you can do what you want! Have more questions about this? We can help you figure out the best way to make sure the distractions are cut out of your ceremony in a kind but firm way!

Tech Tuesday: Wedding Lighting – Part 1

Tech Tuesday: Wedding Lighting – Part 1

Today I want to talk about direct sunlight for outdoor ceremonies. So you think you can’t control your lighting situation for your outdoor wedding? Well, you’re right, but you can control the time of your ceremony as well as the location. If you’re getting married in the summer in southern California, it’s likely that you will have a bright and sunny ceremony. For this first post I’m going to chat with you about time frame for your outdoor wedding and how the direction of light from the sun affects your images.

Let’s start with your wedding venue. Most of us have a choice on where we get married (unless the family paying for the wedding has strong suggestions on locations) and it’s important to consider what the light will be like. First, you need to make a decision on whether you want to have bright direct sunlight while you are standing reciting your vows, or if you want beautiful soft back-lit images. Since we’re talking about direct sunlight today (we’ll talk about back-lit images in another post), here’s how to ensure those blue skies. Almost all photos are taken from the perspective of the guests at the wedding, so that’s where you should be standing when you decide on the light for your wedding. If you want direct light with gorgeous blue skies in the background, you need to make sure that at the time of your ceremony(typically around 4pm-6pm) that the light from the sun is hitting your guests in the back. If your ceremony is later in the afternoon, the sun will be low enough in the sky that on a clear day, you should have beautiful blue skies. With direct sunlight we’ll be able to expose your faces and dress correctly while still keeping those skies blue. Now if you have sensitive eyes this direct light may not be your best option. If you don’t want to be squinting, but you want this look for your photos, then make sure that your wedding starts a little later. The sun won’t be as strong which will make it easier to keep your eyes open.

Now if you’re visiting your venue and notice that the light is coming in from one side or the other, you may want to think about something first. One of you will be in shadow, while the other is in bright sunlight. While we shoot in RAW during these situations for greater editing capabilities, someone is still staring into bright light. So while we may be able to bring back detail in the wedding gown and lighten whoever is in shadow, someone is still squinty. Now if you have super strength eyeballs and the sun doesn’t effect you… then by all means, you should be the one standing in the sun!

Check out this beautiful direct lit wedding that we shot in last summer (you can see more of their ceremony by clicking here). The sunlight is coming in at a slight angle but not enough that either the bride or groom are being blinded, and you can still see detail in the brides dress. Something else to consider is the fact that the sun sets at different times throughout the year. Keep that in mind if your visiting your venue at a different time of year than your actual wedding date. The coordinator at your venue should know the best time to begin your ceremony, but if you have doubts just let us know and we’ll help figure out what the light is going to look like for your big day. Have a question about lighting? Feel free to ask and we’ll be more than happy to address it in an upcoming post! Happy Tuesday!

When the Husband Says “Get Organized”, You DIY!

When the Husband Says “Get Organized”, You DIY!

Recently Adam brought up some issues he was having with my work space. “There are wires and things everywhere! How do you stay organized?” I don’t know what he was talking about, I knew where everything on my cluttered desk was. So what if my work area is out where guests can see it – I’m an artist! But since I’ve been getting back into DIY projects I decided this was the perfect opportunity for a little crafting. So really, I only got my desk organized so I could use some pretty paint.

A quick run through in IKEA and I had found exactly what I needed. A set of three wood boxes and a letter tray! Not too shabby if I do say so myself! First was to paint the boxes, easy peezy. Just used a little painters tape to form the stripes. And now I’ve got a cute pencil holder, vendor business card holder, a catch all for wires and other random electronics and storage system for all the knick knacks that I need access to far more frequently than I should.

Also put together a desktop organizer for my computer in order to keep all my files nice and organized!
2014 03 13 001 When the Husband Says Get Organized, You DIY!
Do I feel a little silly with this plaque sitting on my desk…yes I do. But here’s the thing, running a business in a field you are passionate about is difficult at times. So when I start to doubt I’m doing what I should, or that I’m doing it well enough, this little guy reminds me that our hard work has meant something good to our couples! It’s the little things in life!2014 03 13 002 When the Husband Says Get Organized, You DIY!
2014 03 13 003 When the Husband Says Get Organized, You DIY!
This little paper organizer is my knick knack catch all. I’ve utilized little cardboard boxes to keep everything in it’s own little home. Ink cartridges, homemade confetti, washi tape (I’m obsessed with using it!), paperwork, rechargeable batteries and memory cards – they each have their place. Now, imagine what my desk looked like before! No wonder Adam was a little miffed…2014 03 13 004 When the Husband Says Get Organized, You DIY!

Here is the desktop organizer I created using photoshop. Definitely helps me keep the files on my computer organized plus prioritize what my to do list will be. And yes, that is a little A. A. Milne quote. It definitely takes me back to my childhood when Winnie the Pooh said the most inspirational things I’d ever heard!

And here is the final product. Workspace free of clutter! If you have additional ideas for organization, whether you’re a photographer or not, I would love to hear them!! You can never be too organized! Happy Friday Everyone!

Tech Tuesday: Canon 85mm f1.2

Tech Tuesday: Canon 85mm f1.2

Today will be the first of many Tech topics that I will be discussing. We’ve been thinking a lot about how we can let our brides know a little bit more about our photography style. Explaining some of our equipment and why we shoot the way we do seems like a great place to start!

So today we will be focusing on a lens that is one of our favorite’s to use and I’ll show you why. I’ve decided to go with the Canon 85mm f1.2 lens. This lens is what is called a prime lens, it does not zoom, but the clarity and color of the final product is beautiful. The f1.2 in the description of the lens means that you can shoot in low light situations without using a flash. It also means that the depth of field achieved in an image can be very narrow. A narrow focus allows us to concentrate on a single person or thing in an image. This helps us to point out what is most important in our image, it draws attention to our main subject.

In the images below you will clearly see what we want you to focus on (no pun intended) first in our image. With the close up shots directly below, we wanted you to see the details of the wedding. The gorgeous wedding bouquet and the watch that the bride gifted to her groom. When you see the images, you won’t be able to tell what exactly is in the background, it’s all about the details.

The final images are a bit drawn back, they focus on the couple and their love for one another, but also the style they chose for their wedding. In this instance it was the classic suit and white wedding gown. In the last image it shows the beauty of the brides and the peace that she feels after her vows.

If any of these images had been shot with a wide zoom lens you would not get the focus fall off in the background, which would draw more attention to the scene as opposed to the couple. There are times during the wedding day that we want to capture the entire scene, but for these shots we didn’t want the background to be a distraction. For example, each one of these shots was taken in the middle of the street with cars all around the couple. There’s only one where you can make out the cars, but they don’t distract from what we want you to see.

Happy Tech Tuesday,  if you have any questions about anything in this post or any other post, make be sure to leave a comment and we will make sure to address it! Thanks for following us!

Personal Side: In Remembrance

Personal Side: In Remembrance

2014 03 05 001 Personal Side: In Remembrance

Recently, Adam and I were reminiscing about growing up and the people who affected us the most. For Adam, it was his grandmother. She was a beautiful woman full of patience and love. Anytime I was in her presence she made sure I felt like I was the most important person in the world. She hardly knew me but went out her way to show she cared. The few times I was able to speak with her alone, she would listen with rapt attention. Now let’s be honest, I’m not that entertaining or thought provoking, so the only conclusion I can reach is that she actually cared that much!

So how does this tie into pictures of some stools? Well, they belonged to Adam’s grandmother. They’ve been sitting in our garage for quite some time covered with rust and missing some parts. In remembrance of her and Adam’s happy childhood, we decided to refurbish them with a little elbow grease and a cheerful teal paint. Now these sit in our kitchenette as a reminder to Adam of his wonderful childhood memories. I asked Adam to tell a quick story and instead he wrote a letter, and my heart melts.

Grandma,

You were the one. The one that held this family together. I spent many of days with you in your kitchen sitting on these exact stools. It was my favorite place in the entire house (except for maybe in Grandpa’s old truck, or riding with him on your John Deere). You understood me like no one else in the family did. You taught me many life lessons as I sat on these stools. I learned the meaning of Christmas (not the gift giving) but how to love. You always told me to speak from my heart, I still do to this day, even though it may get me in trouble. I learned how to cook using things from your garden in the backyard. My favorite was corn, I may have tweaked the recipe a little bit, but then again, I don’t have to cook for 20 people. We would sit on these stools together and look out the back window, over the yard, past the pool, and through to the farm land. We would watch deer eat your plants and squirrels run up the trees. We would play cards and we would cheat at cards. We would make punch, maybe not the punch I like now, but I can still taste it in mouth when I think of it. I did my homework at these stools, you helped when you could. You talked to me about how to treat women, how to be kind to your fellow man. When I was old enough, we drank wine on these stools, and plenty of it. When I fell in love, I mean really really in love, we sat on these stools and I explained to you how I knew that she was the one for me. Laura and I sat on these stools when I introduced you to her for the first time, she may have been a bit intimidated by our large family, but at least she got to enjoy the serenity of chatting with you before it was too late. I miss all of our talks, that may have been one of our last real conversations before the cancer set in. I’m so happy that you got to meet Laura and see how happy I was. This was all you ever wanted for me. Those stools have taken me through some rough times in my life. Once you passed and we were going through your house, I only wanted two things from you, some picture frames, that Laura and I still have in our house, and these stools. Every time I sit on them I think of you and reminisce over all the talks that we had. I love you and miss with every beat of my heart, I can’t wait to see you again someday. I know you are watching over me, and Lord knows I need it, so thank you!

On the Personal Side: Catching Your Dreams

On the Personal Side: Catching Your Dreams

2014 02 27 001 On the Personal Side: Catching Your Dreams

Over the past couple of months my DIY crafting bug has arisen after a long hiatus. Thanks to a few good friends I am back in action! Though I have to give credit where credit is due… I owe my desire to craft to my Mother. My mother is quite possibly the sweetest human being I’ve ever met. From an early age I was encouraged to create. This became a problem once I reached my early teens and saw my older brothers getting “cool” gifts. I specifically remember my mother asking me what I wanted for Christmas when I was around the age of 16, I’m not proud of my response. I looked at her and told her I didn’t care what I got as long as it wasn’t another craft set. Sheesh! I’d been getting bead sets, friendship bracelet sets, make your own lipbalm sets etc. forever! I think I even told her I hated crafts… yes it’s true, I was a royal brat!

But the seed had been planted. I love being creative and thinking outside the box. I think that’s why I love photography so much. There’s something about looking through a camera and capturing a moment, that is indescribably fulfilling. I’m grateful for a mother who let me discover who I was, but encouraged me to be creative whenever possible. Obviously I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without her loving pushes!

So, on to this dream catcher. A few girlfriends and I have a craft night from time to time (which has affectionately been labeled “bitch n’ stitch night” by one of our not invited men – what?! we’re crafting and talking about our lives! Anyway, my girlfriend Cat had said she was making a dream catcher, so I copied her. Real original I know. Although it’s true that I have Native American in my blood, I made this dream catcher to encourage me in the pursuit of my dreams. I didn’t create this to catch my bad dreams but more to remind me to acknowledge that I have good dreams. Dreams for the future of our business,  for our relationship, for myself personally. I think sometimes we all get afraid of the goals we want to set, or where we want to get to. This is my cute reminder to be aware of the decisions I’m making and whether or not they will take me to those dreams. If I stay within my comfort zone I’ll never get anywhere – this is just a visual reminder to go catch my dream!

As far as assembly of this dream catcher, it was quite simple though a little time consuming. Started with a bunch of feathers that I littered with a little gold paint. Then I used a leatherette string to connect those feathers to an embroidery ring. Wrapping the string around the ring took the longest! Then I had to hunt through the neighborhood with Sailor (lab puppy if you didn’t know) for an appropriate stick. All in all, easy. And a great reminder to go after those dreams! Thanks Mom for getting me into crafting and continuing to buy me craft sets even after I said I didn’t want any more. I love you.

Happy Friday and Stay Golden!2014 02 27 004 On the Personal Side: Catching Your Dreams

Wedding Rings and Why We Love Them!

Wedding Rings and Why We Love Them!

2014 02 26 004 Wedding Rings and Why We Love Them!

We love shooting details of our couples wedding days. All the little things that when combined, make their day unique and personal. One of our favorites are the rings! Not only are they so sparkly but their significance is so special. That moment when you stand before family and friends and use a ring to symbolize your commitment is incredible!

Adam and I had our wedding celebration in Riviera Maya, Mexico. We had all the legal papers signed before heading down, so by the time we actually exchanged rings we’d been “officially” married for a couple weeks. But it wasn’t until we started our vows and the ring ceremony that things got super real for me. Not in a bad way! But in a “this is huge!!” type of way. The moment those wedding bands went on it felt like it was finally official! Not just because it was in front of family and friends, but because now a stranger could look at my hand and know that I was in a “committed for life” relationship!

I was reading some of the history for wedding bands yada yada and have decided not to be boring. So in a nutshell, an engagement ring signifies that you desire to spend the rest of your life with someone (Did you know that in the early 1900’s the jewelry industry made a huge marketing push for men’s engagement rings?! crazy! obviously that didn’t work!). And a wedding band means you’ve committed to do just that. While I don’t think seeing a wedding band in modern society means as much, it should! Remember those vows? That wedding band is a physical reminder of your promises on your wedding day. I feel like I’m starting to get preachy so I’m stopping!  Today, if you’re married or engaged, take the time to think about how special the rings you and your spouse or fiancee wear!

Happy Hump Day!

Our Albums and Why We Chose Them

Our Albums and Why We Chose Them

2014 02 21 013 Our Albums and Why We Chose Them

After your wedding day is over and your images have been delivered, it’s incredible to see them in print! So let’s talk about albums! When Adam and I were deciding on an album company we wanted to decide on one whose style we would personally choose. But we also wanted to offer our clients a high quality product. So we decided to go with the beautiful KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) books album company.

The design is simple and elegant and their covers of premium leather and textured linen are gorgeous. The albums are square (which we love!) and each album from the 4×4 to the 12×12 is printed on Fuji Crystal Archival paper. Another thing we love is how flat they lay. You can literally have an image of a person in the crease and the image is hardly affected. And as you can see in the last picture, they come in sweet little cases to protect the albums. I don’t want to bore you with the other reasons we chose KISS, why not just let these images speak for themselves!

Here are just a few of the gobs of different color choices, check it out! If you want more information please let us know and we’ll pass it along!

On The Personal Side: The Adventure of Facing Your Fears

On The Personal Side: The Adventure of Facing Your Fears

2014 02 17 002 On The Personal Side: The Adventure of Facing Your Fears

If I told you that facing your fears is an amazing experience, what would you say? Here’s the truth of it – it can be down right terrifying! But can ultimately lead to a more fulfilling and adventurous life. I’ve been thinking about this topic over the past month or so and wanted to share what I’ve been experiencing. Some may say I’m a bit introspective and they are correct!

So, the fear of riding my motorcycle first developed about a year and a half ago. To set the scene, it was a beautiful fall day and Adam was teaching me the basics of motorcycle riding in an empty parking lot. I was excited, nervous and filled with anticipation. While taking a slow turn I had a little wobble and panicked! Instead of staying calm and just continuing to ease through the turn, I gunned the engine, lost control and dropped the bike. (I’m sure there’s an analogy here too!) While I wasn’t physically hurt, the bike did have a few minor injuries. Obviously I was a bit shook up and didn’t get back on the bike that day, or the entire year afterwards.

After that experience I told myself that I was just nervous to try again because I was scared of dropping the bike and hurting myself or damaging the bike. Every time Adam tried to get me back on the bike I would make up an excuse (“it’s too cold/hot outside”, “I have a lot of work to do”, etc.). It wasn’t until I took a minute to examine what my fear really was that I decided to face it.  You see, I wasn’t scared of dropping the bike, I was afraid of failing. I was scared to make an attempt and drop the ball. Afraid that I would get excited again and then not have the courage to follow through. And of course the idea of friends seeing me fail only strengthened my fear. My insecurities kept me from so many adventures!

After realizing that there was a deeper reason that I refused to try again, I made a decision to face my fears. So I enrolled in a new riders class. To be surrounded by strangers from all walks of life that were in the same stage as me was incredibly liberating. I wasn’t thinking of failing but proving myself. And I did!

Since then, Adam and our good friends have enjoyed many of incredible adventures. Here is one of the excursions we had last weekend. A drive up to the mountains, Hells Kitchen, Cooks Corner (these are biker hangouts – and incredible for people watching!). After facing my fear of failure I am able to feel the rush of success. While I am still new to riding, I no longer feel insecure about making a mistake. It’s all a part of the journey. This realization carries over into all aspects of life, personal and professional. So remember to question yourself. What fears are holding you back from so much joy? What is the real reason you won’t try something new? If there is a fear of failure – maybe you should put your big girl shoes on and give it a try! We each have the power to make life an adventure so go out there and do it!

As I started making my list of new years resolutions (I don’t typically do this by that way), there was a reoccurring theme – BALANCE! The big picture is that I need to balance my business life and my personal one. Now, I love to work! I go a little crazy when I know I can be doing something and am not. But I’ve realized that this isn’t healthy. For instance, if Adam and I have weddings on the weekend, I should probably take a day off during the week. This past year I did no such thing. So I’ve spent the past few weeks organizing my life so I can work smarter – not harder.

First thing I tackled was getting all the random things off of our kitchen counter top.  It’s amazing how sunglasses, keys and random mail seems to take over our kitchen leaving a feeling of disarray! So it started with a group of frames that we’d used to decorate with in our last home. They’ve been lying around for awhile now and I got to wondering how I could use them. I came up with some simple solutions for our clutter.

2014 01 23 002 Home Organization Ideas

Here are a majority of the supplies we used. Magnetic paint, chalkboard paint, hemp, wine corks and the trusty glue gun. All of these supplies (sans wine corks) can be found at just about any craft store.

And here you have it! Some simple frames, a little elbow grease, and our counters are clutter free! Now the next area to tackle was my desk. Soon I’ll show you how I made a place for everything while adding some pops of color. I mean, I sit here all day – might as well enjoy the view! Happy Friday!

Janelle + Bobby: Rustic Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club Wedding

Janelle + Bobby: Rustic Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club Wedding

Welcome to Janelle and Bobby’s wonderful celebration! The wedding and reception were held at the Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo which was the perfect location for all their rustic accents! All the lanterns are thanks to Janelle’s collecting skills. The flowers were absolutely gorgeous and done by Green Leaf Designs.

There are so many things that I absolutely adored about this day!! Not only are Janelle and Bobby just the sweetest couple – but their friends and family were amazing! A reoccurring theme throughout the day was to see Janelle and Bobby surrounded by their loved ones. For instance, typically a ‘First Look’ is just the couple getting to spend a little time alone – but not Janelle and Bobby! Their close friends and family were there to witness the joy of seeing each other for the first time. Then the bridal party joined in the first dance which was so cute! Just awesome to see so many loved ones rejoicing at seeing these two finally tie the knot!

Bevin + Mark: Winery Inspired Wedding

Bevin + Mark: Winery Inspired Wedding

It finally happened! Mark and Bevin tied the knot! I think it felt like a long time coming because of how much Bevin involved us with her plans. I’ve never felt more a part of a wedding. From being sent a dress pic from a fitting, to getting updates about all their gorgeous details, we couldn’t be happier with being chosen for their special day. Bevin was so totally organized. There were even times I would give her something to add to her to do list – and she would tell me she had already had it done! I think I eventually told her that she’d out-planned herself (I mean that it a good way, in a “I’m in Awe!” way.)

First, if you haven’t seen it, we had a blast with their engagement session – it was there I started to get a glimpse of what to expect moving forward with Bevin as the organized woman she is. She showed up with a bag of all different types of props and of course wine that assisted in the uber cute shots on the dock. After that I knew that this couple was going to totally personalize their wedding. Which got me more than a little excited for it!!

So here we go! We started at one of their favorite places – The Book Loft in German Village – for their first look.  Then it was off to tool around Columbus finding unique spots for the bridal party shots. We were a little worried about finding locations due to the fact that it’s December in the Midwest (trees offer no shade because there are no leaves!)  and the forecast said there wouldn’t be a cloud in the sky. Ahh!! But with a little persistence we found some perfect spots and the sun decided to cooperate with us. Hallelujah!

Then it was back to Via Vecchia Winery for a heartfelt ceremony and a celebration to rival all celebrations. Details galore, a little surprise for Mark, tears, loads of laughter, and dancing!!

We are happy to present to you the merging of two families, the commitment of one soulmate to the other, and the support of loving friends. We couldn’t be happier that Bevin and Mark found each other and are on this journey called life together!

Janelle + Bobby: Laguna Canyon Engagement Session

Janelle + Bobby: Laguna Canyon Engagement Session

I first met Janelle in the bathroom of Bobby’s cousin’s wedding – a first! Not wanting to pounce when I heard she was looking for a wedding photographer (I never want to be salsey!) I just told her she could contact us if she wanted to talk. Luckily she did!! So happy with this engagement session! We met up in Laguna Canyon at the perfect time of day to get some gorgeous light. They even hiked up a little mountain (slight exaggeration) when the sun was dipping to get some beautiful shots!

Janelle and Bobby are so cute together! While I LOVE the fact that they’ve been together for 10 years, I adore the fact that they are still so clearly smitten with each other. They were a pleasure to work with and I cannot wait for their wedding come January.

Jessica + Jesse: Winery Wedding

Jessica + Jesse: Winery Wedding

I’ve been thinking about what I would write for Jessica and Jesse’s wedding blog post since the morning of the big day! I’ll start with the cutest conversation I had with a bridesmaid. While all the ladies were getting ready I started to notice that Jessica seemed a little nervous. I mean just a tiny bit but I wanted to make sure I was in the loop so I wouldn’t do anything to make it worse. So I asked one of the bridesmaids if she was okay and was surprised by the answer – the bridesmaid thought she was nervous about her makeup? I mean she looked gorgeous and only had on a tastefully small amount. But then the Bridesmaid got very serious and told me the rest of the issue. “You have to understand”, she said very seriously, “Jesse loves her EXACTLY the way she is. Without makeup or anything. She’ll just feel better when she sees him.” Ummm… my heart just melted <3 Plus, look at this girl – SO gorgeous!!

Then more cuteness happened during the speeches. Jesse’s brother was talking about meeting Jessica for the first time. He recounted a story about Jesse getting up and walking away from a conversation, he said he watched as Jessica just sat quietly and followed him with her eyes as he walked from the room. Every person that spoke about these two did so with such love and support. I’m pretty sure everyone knew they were meant to be together as soon as they saw them interact together.

Okay, the wedding! The ceremony took place at Liberty Presbyterian Church in Delaware, Ohio. Then the reception took place at Via Vecchia Winery in the brewery district. Both were perfect venues and really set the mood for this perfect fall wedding. The details at the reception were simply charming. Old books filled the center of the tables where candles lit the space giving it a warm and inviting feeling. Attached to each place card was a vintage looking key (and since Adam and I were actually seated with the guests (honored!) they have been attached to our key rings). Everything about Jessica and Jesse’s wedding day was beautiful – from the decor to the way these two looked at each other. We are thrilled to have gotten to take part in such a wonderful day for Mr. & Mrs. Richards!! Blessings to you both!

Oh and if you missed their engagement session, here’s a link to see it. Definitely worth a look see!

Devin + Erik: Strawberry Farms Wedding

Devin + Erik: Strawberry Farms Wedding

Welcome to Devin and Erik’s Strawberry Farms Wedding! This couple has been an absolute delight to work with. They’re both so laid back and relaxed! We met up with the two of them the week before the wedding and were impressed with how they were handling everything. From needing to hunt down a couple more pairs of shoes for the bridal party, to still needing to get gifts, there was not a worry at all! We asked them if they  were nervous at all and both were cool as cucumbers.

That said, I have to share my favorite moment of the day! I stopped in the barn to check in with the guys before Devin and Erik’s first look and encountered an adorably nervous groom! The normally calm Erik was so excited to see his bride. So cute! But then as I was walking with Devin to the location for their first look I realized she had stopped. I turned around to find her taking some deep breaths with huge crocodile tears in her eyes. All she said was, “I can see him!”. After that it was all I could do to get far enough in front of her to take pictures – she made a bee-line for Erik!

After Devin and Erik’s engagement session we just knew they were going to be a blast. They compliment each other so perfectly. During their engagement session Devin did an amazing job of making her husband-to-be smile. And it was no different for their wedding day. She even posed the two of them a couple times – ha! Awesome!!

Okay, we loved the rustic details that Devin and Erik added. Already having the perfect backdrop for a relaxed country feeling wedding, their additions were perfect and charming. The milk bottle jars they used as vases were a favorite (I even got to take a couple home with me!). Subtle hints of burlap, bouquets that had a wildflower feel to them, vans for all – everything was perfect!

Congratulations Devin and Erik! We were honored to be present for your wedding!

Shirley + Ed: Laguna Hills Wedding

When we first met Shirley and Ed (vis Skype), we realized how perfect they were for each other. Especially loved Edward with his surprise proposal using the ploy of searching for a stuffed animal! And after hearing their friends and family ranting and raving about how no one else could possibly be meant for the other, it was confirmed! They are so cute and playful with each other!

One thing we’ve noticed over the years is that by observing the family and friends of our wonderful couples, you can really get a sense of who they really are. Shirley and Ed have an incredible support group! From family that loves them unconditionally – to friends who organize a surprise flash mob at their wedding. They’ve both got a calm way about them, while still being incredibly fun!

They put together a lovely wedding at The Hills Hotel in Laguna Hills. In it they combined a number of Chinese traditions with an otherwise modern feeling wedding and it turned out absolutely beautiful. Loved that they used tons of cards they’d written to each other over the course of their long-distance relationship as a part of their centerpieces! And Shirley made the cake toppers – so cute!! Congratulations Shirley + Ed – You have many adventures before you!2013 10 31 001 Shirley + Ed: Laguna Hills Wedding

Brittany+Brandon: Aliso Viejo Wedding

Brittany+Brandon: Aliso Viejo Wedding

Okay, this wedding has definitely taken me longer than normal to blog – but I have an excuse!! When I picked images for the blog I had far too many. Even now that I’ve narrowed it down a bit, I STILL have a lot! So family, please forgive me for not including all the formal shots. You’ll just have to wait for the rest of the images to be done! I kind of wanted to just post the whole wedding. So, welcome to Brittany+Brandon’s Aliso Viejo Wedding!

The day started off with the boys doing a little surf session in San Clemente. Actually the same area where we shot Brittany and Brandon’s engagement session – if you haven’t seen it yet, you absolutely must check it out! Click here to see it. Then we met up with Brittany a little later at The Pacific Edge Hotel in Laguna Beach where she was getting ready with her adorable bridesmaids. Loved the different dresses each bridesmaid had! And the flowers – TO DIE FOR! Tricia Barr from Designs by Tricia is responsible for that. After the ladies had all gotten beautified it was off to the wedding!

Brittany and Brandon officially tied the knot at The Aliso Viejo Country Club. It was the perfect location for their celebration. Okay, now I’ve got to get a little personal here. We absolutely adore this couple. After their engagement session we just knew that we were going to have a blast shooting their wedding. Brittany was an absolutely delightful bride to work with! And so STUNNING! And the love they have for each other is so special. Any couple who makes each other laugh so easily is doing something right.

B+B, we wish you two all the love in the world. And with a support system like you two have, we know that you are destined for a life time of true happiness! <3

Jenny+Neil: Victoria Beach Engagement

Jenny+Neil: Victoria Beach Engagement

So we’ve been excited about Jenny and Neil’s engagement session since our first meeting. When I found out that Neil had proposed using a Pride & Prejudice themed scavenger hunt – oh I just about died! Having always loved pride and prejudice (the book, the movie, even the ridiculously long BBC version) I was in awe of this couple. Not only that, but when Jenny reached her final destination of the hunt, her family was waiting in support. This man took great care to make Jenny feel special, but also knew how important her family is and included them in their a special moment. Jenny, he’s a keeper!

Okay, so for their engagement session we started at an outdoor space where they not only had their first date (my memory is correct right?!), but also where the scavenger hunt started. While we ended up getting kicked out (oops!), we still had enough time to capture exactly what we needed! Then we headed down to Laguna Beach and the gorgeous Victoria Beach. These two were awesome trekking through sand, climbing boulders and even walking on razor sharp rocks! It’s always amazing when couples trust us enough to get a little uncomfortable to get a gorgeous shot. And gorgeous they are! We were fortunate to have the clouds recede just enough to get a beautiful sunset right at the very end of our session! We’re so pleased to be a part of your modern day fairy tale!

Sherrell+Scott: Laguna Engagement

Sherrell+Scott: Laguna Engagement

We’ve been excitedly waiting for this great couples laguna engagement session! Ever since sharing a glass of wine and listening to their hilarious stories we just knew they were going to be amazing to work with! They’re both so relaxed and laid back. Their playful banter back and forth was so cute to see! Scott is definitely the Yin to Sherrell’s Yang. The first few times they met, things didn’t go so well. But fate had another plan and again threw them into a situation together. Luckily they realized that their preconceived ideas about each other were false and instead they’d each found the love of their life. We’re so happy you two found each other!!  Oh and a bonus, we had some pretty perfect weather for their Laguna Beach Engagement Session. Blue skies, great light. Couldn’t have been better! Definitely looking forward to the big day!!

Meredyth+Ryan: Dana Point Wedding

Meredyth+Ryan: Dana Point Wedding

Welcome to the Dana Point Wedding of Meredyth and Ryan! They created a heart felt and gorgeous celebration. Everything from the venue to the details clearly spoke about them as individuals and a couple. The wedding and reception took place at the beautiful Laguna Cliffs Resort and Spa in Dana Point, California. From the moment we got a good look at Meredyth’s dress we knew this was going to be a beautiful day. Loved all the beach inspired decor. From the place settings, to the “guestbook” – just check it out!

I find myself wanting to share all the emotional moments of the day, but know that words won’t do them justice. Adam teases me a little that I get so emotional during the vows and speeches, but this wedding got to me a little more than the usual. Wiping actual tears from my face after their touching vows was a little embarrassing until I looked around and didn’t see a single dry eye in the place. It was a perfect day and I know that the family looking down from heaven were right there with everyone – tears in their eyes, pride in their hearts.

After the ceremony they had a gorgeous reception with loads of dancing and laughter. You know it’s a good time when a groomsmen is doing a little strip tease! I even got pulled into dance at one point! All in all – wonderful day with a couple who are very much in love. At the reception they just couldn’t get enough of each other! So cute! So lucky to have been a part of the first day of the rest of their lives!
